Welcome to Lexington, Kentucky.

Lexington is located in Fayette County and it is the county seat. The city is located in east-central Kentucky, about 80 miles east of Louisville.

The mean average temperature in Lexington is 54.9 degrees and the annual precipitation is 45.68 inches. The city and the Bluegrass region enjoy four distinct seasons that include cool plateau breezes and moderate nights in the summer.

Lexington is one of the oldest cities west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is said that the name was given to the settlement by pioneers who had just received news of the Battle of Lexington. The Kentucky legislature held its first sessions in Lexington in 1792, the year that Kentucky separated from Virginia.

The area is noted for tobacco farming and thoroughbred racing horses. General Electric Company, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A. and United Parcel Service also are present, among others, in Lexington. Many attractions are equestrian-oriented.

Home of the University of Kentucky, Lexington is a charming southern city, a beautiful downtown filled with Victorian architecture, and fantastic neighborhoods. Lexington is a very underrated city.

The outstanding center in the United States for the raising of thoroughbred horses, it is also an important market for tobacco, livestock, and bluegrass seed as well as a railroad shipping point for E Kentucky's oil, coal, farm produce, and quarry products. Lexington has railroad shops and plants making fixtures, metal products, processed foods, machinery, and transportation and electronic equipment. The Univ. of Kentucky and Transylvania Univ. are there, as is Keeneland Racetrack.

Lexington, Kentucky is the "Horse Capital of the World," located in the heart of the Bluegrass. It is the second largest city in Kentucky and has the second largest metropolitan area (after Louisville). Lexington is home to the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland race course, a JIF peanut butter plant which produces more peanut butter than any other factory in the world, Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky. UK's basketball program is immensely popular in the city; for example, the area code (859) spells out UKY. The University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team has won more games than any other team in college basketball.
